Bearing capacity in geotechnical engineering is ability of the ground to support loads applied from a structure. Allowable bearing capacity is usually mentioned in structural footing drawings to inform contractors' minimum required allowable bearing capacity of the material.

This may also be required when setting up a crane or a piling rig within areas where ground support maybe inadequate for working loads.
